The “face of God” is a symbol of His favor, presence, blessing, and relational nearness. To have God’s face “shine upon” someone signifies grace and peace (Numbers 6:25), while for God to “hide His face” represents the withdrawal of that felt communion. Theologically, this metaphor does not imply that God literally abandons His creation, for God’s omnipresence remains constant. Instead, it portrays the spiritual consequences of sin: human rebellion creates a barrier that obscures the experience of God’s presence and disrupts fellowship with Him. The “hidden face” reflects divine holiness reacting to human disobedience, showing that sin is not merely a moral mistake but a rupture in relationship. Yet even in these moments of divine hiddenness, Scripture consistently holds out hope—God’s hiddenness is often temporary and intended to lead His people to repentance, restoration, and renewed covenant intimacy.

2. [Deuteronomy 32:20] “I will hide my face from them,” he said, “and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation, children who are unfaithful.

7. [Isaiah 59:2] But your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He does not hear.

8. [Jeremiah 5:25] Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good.

9. [Ezekiel 39:23] And the nations will know that the house of Israel went into exile for their iniquity, because they were unfaithful to Me. So I hid My face from them and delivered them into the hands of their enemies, so that they all fell by the sword.
