Historically, Allah was the moon god who married the sun goddess, and they begot three daughters namely Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat. These three daughters are also mentioned in Quran 53:19-20 as among of the deities worshipped by the Arab pagans. Muhammad assured his believers that to see the moon is to see Allah. The Hadiths below account this statement of Muhammad;
1. [Sahih al-Bukhari 554] Narrated Qais: Jarir said, “We were with the Prophet and he looked at the moon–full-moon–and said, ‘Certainly you will see your Lord as you see this moon and you will have no trouble in seeing Him. So if you can avoid missing (through sleep or business, etc.) a prayer before the sunrise (Fajr) and a prayer before sunset (`Asr), you must do so.’ He then recited Allah’s Statement: And celebrate the praises Of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting.” (50.39) Isma`il said, “Offer those prayers and do not miss them.”
2. [Sahih al-Bukhari 573] Narrated Jarir bin `Abdullah: We were with the Prophet on a full moon night. He looked at the moon and said, “You will certainly see your Lord as you see this moon, and there will be no trouble in seeing Him. So if you can avoid missing (through sleep, business, etc.) a prayer before the rising of the sun (Fajr) and before its setting (`Asr) you must do so. He (the Prophet then recited the following verse: And celebrate the praises Of Your Lord before The rising of the sun And before (its) setting.” (50.39)
3. [Sahih al-Bukhari 4851] Narrated Jarir bin `Abdullah: We were in the company of the Prophet on a fourteenth night (of the lunar month), and he looked at the (full) moon and said, “You will see your Lord as you see this moon, and you will have no trouble in looking at Him. So, whoever can, should not miss the offering of prayers before sunrise (Fajr prayer) and before sunset (`Asr prayer).” Then the Prophet recited: ‘And celebrate the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting.’ (50.39)
4. [Sahih al-Bukhari 7434] Narrated Jarir: We were sitting with the Prophet and he looked at the moon on the night of the full-moon and said, “You people will see your Lord as you see this full moon, and you will have no trouble in seeing Him, so if you can avoid missing (through sleep or business, etc.) a prayer before sunrise (Fajr) and a prayer before sunset (`Asr) you must do so.” (See Hadith No. 529, Vol. 1)
5. [Sahih al-Bukhari 7436] Narrated Jarir: Allah’s Messenger came out to us on the night of the full moon and said, “You will see your Lord on the Day of Resurrection as you see this (full moon) and you will have no difficulty in seeing Him.”
6. [Sahih muslim 633a] Jarir b. Abdullah is reported to have said: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah that he looked at the full moon and observed: You shall see your Lord as you are seeing this moon, and you will not be harmed by seeing Him. So if you can, do not let -yourselves be overpowered in case of prayer observed before the rising of the sun and its setting, i. e. the ‘Asr prayer and the morning prayer. Jarir then recited it:” Celebrate the praise of thy Lord before the rising of the sun and before Its setting” (xx. 130).
7. [Sahih Muslim 663b] Waki’ reported (this hadith) with the same chain of transmitters (that the Holy Prophet) said You will be soon presented before your Lord, and you will see Him as you are seeing this moon, and then recited (the above-mentioned verse). But (in this hadith) no mention is made of Jarir.
8. [Sunan Ibn Dawud 4729] Jarir b. ‘Abd Allah said : When we are were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) he looked at the moon on the night when it was full, that is, fourteenth, and said : You will see your Lord as you see this (moon) and have no doubts about seeing him. If, therefore, you can keep from being prevented from prayer before the sun rises and before it sets, do so. He then recited :”Celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting”.
9. [Sunan Ibn Majah 177] It was narrated that Jarir bin ‘Abdullah said: “We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah. He looked at the moon, which was full, and said, ‘Indeed, you will see your Lord as you see this moon. You will not feel the slightest inconvenience and overcrowding in seeing Him. If you have the power not to be overcome and to say this prayer before the sun rises and before it sets, then do that.’ Then he recited: “And glorify the praises of your Lord, before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting.”
10. [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2554] Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: “Do you crowd one another in order to see the moon on the night of a full moon? Do you crowd one another in order to see the sun?” They said: “No.” He said: “So verily, you shall see your Lord as you see the moon on the night of a full moon, you shall not crowd one another to see Him.”
11. [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2551] Jarir bin ‘Abdullah Al-Bajali narrated: “We were seated with the Prophet (s.a.w) when he looked towards the moon on the night of a full moon and said: “Indeed you shall be placed before your Lord and you shall see Him as you see this moon. You will see Him without trouble. So if you are able to keep from becoming overwhelmed from prayer before the rising of the sun and before its setting, then do so.” Then he recited: And glorify the praises of your Lord before the setting.”
12. [Riyad as-Salihin 1895] Jarir bin ‘Abdullah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah when he looked at the full moon and observed, “You shall see your Rubb (Lord) in the Hereafter as you are seeing this moon; and you will not feel the slightest inconvenience in seeing Him.”
13. [Mishkat al-Masabih 5655] Jarir b. ‘Abdallah reported God’s messenger as saying, “You will have ocular vision of your Lord.” In a version he told that when they were sitting with God’s messenger, he looked at the moon on the night when it was full and said, “You will see your Lord as you see this moon and have no doubts about seeing Him. If, therefore, you can keep from being prevented from prayer before the sun rises and before it sets, do so.” He then recited, “Celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting[*].” *Quran; 20:130
