Muhammad Was Accused of Copying From Legends

“Do they not consider how camels have been created? Nor how the sky has been lifted up? Nor how the mountains have been erected? Nor even how the earth has been flattened out?”

The shape of the Islamic Earth

When Muhammad presented the Quran as a series of divine revelations from God, many of the people of his time refused to believe his claim. Instead, they accused him of repeating ancient legends, myths, and stories that had already been circulating among earlier peoples. According to the Quran itself, these accusations were raised repeatedly by Muhammad’s contemporaries, who rejected his message and questioned the divine origin of his revelations. The Quranic verses below record how people at the beginning of Islam responded to Muhammad’s claims. Were these accusations false and baseless, or did the people have legitimate reasons for questioning the source of the Quran?

[Quran 6:25] And among them are those who listen to you, but We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. Even when they come to you arguing with you, those who disbelieve say, “This is not but legends of the former peoples.”

[Quran 8:31] And when Our verses are recited to them, they say, “We have heard. If we willed, we could say [something] like this. This is not but legends of the former peoples.”

[Quran 16:24] And when it is said to them, “What has your Lord sent down?” They say, “Legends of the former peoples,”

[Quran 23:83] We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples.”

[Quran 25:5] And they say, “Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon.”

[Quran 27:68] We have been promised this, we and our forefathers before. This is not but legends of the former peoples.”

[Quran 46:17] And he who says to his parents: Fie on you! do you threaten me that I shall be brought forth when generations have already passed away before me? And they both call for Allah’s aid: Woe to you! believe, surely the promise of Allah is true. But he says: This is nothing but stories of the ancients.

[Quran 68:15] When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “Legends of the former peoples.”

[Quran 83:13] When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “Legends of the former peoples.”

This accusation by the people against Muhammad turned out to be true, because the Quran (Quranic book) contains legends or mythical stories indeed;

  1. Quran never says one God but collection 9f gods collectively called one Allah. Allah is the unification of gods. Q 38:5 “Has He reduced all the Gods to One God? Indeed. This is something totally astonishing. Dr. Robert A. Morey, “Islam Unveiled – The True Desert Storm”, “… Allah. He was the moon god who married the sun goddess. Together they produced three goddesses who called the daughters of Allah. These three goddess were called Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat”, p. 48-49. The Encyclopedia of Religion mentions that Allah is a pre-islamic name… corresponding to the Babylonian Bel”, p.46.
