‘Messiah’ is a Hebrew word which means ‘the anointed king’ translated as “Christos” in Greek and ‘Christ’ in English. In Tanakh (Old Testament), God promised His people to send a Messiah so as to save them. The following are some of the prophesies in the Old Testament (maroon-highlighted) about the Messiah or Savior which are fulfilled by Jesus in the New Testament (red-highlighted);
1. THE SAVIOR IS A SEED OF A WOMAN
[Genesis 3:15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
[Matthew 1:20 & Galatians 4:4] But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law
2. THE SAVIOR IS A DESCENDANT OF ABRAHAM, AND THROUGH HIM ALL FAMILIES AND NATIONS SHALL BE BLESSED
[Genesis 22:18] Through your descendant all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.
[Galatians 3:16] The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his descendant. Scripture doesn’t say, “descendants,” referring to many, but “your descendant,” referring to one. That descendant is Christ.
[Acts 3:25] You are the descendants of the prophets and the heirs of the promise that God made to our ancestors when he said to Abraham, “Through your descendant all people on earth will be blessed.”
3. A STAR WILL MARCH FORTH OUT OF JACOB (ISRAEL)
[Numbers 24:17] I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
[Matthew 2:1-2] Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
4. GOD WILL RAISE UP A PROPHET LIKE MOSES, A GOD’S SPEAKER
[Deuteronomy 18:18] “I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto you, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him”
[Luke 7:16] Fear gripped them all, and they began glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited His people!”
And also in;
[John 12:49] “For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak”
5. THE MESSIAH OR SAVIOR WILL BE BORN TO A VIRGIN WOMAN
[Isaiah 7:14] Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel
[Matthew 1:23] “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”)
[Luke 1:35] “How will this be”, Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”. The angel answered, “the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy one to be born will be called the Son of God”
6. HE WILL BE BORN IN BETLEHEM
[Micah 5:2] “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
[Matthew 2:1] After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem.
7. HE WILL BE DECLARED BY THE FATHER AS HIS SON
[Psalm 2:7] I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father
[Matthew 3:16-17] As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
8. THE SALVATION OR SAVIOR WILL DWELL AND BE SEEN ON EARTH
[Psalm 85:9] Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, That glory may dwell in our land.
[Psalm 67:1-2] God be merciful to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us, that Your way may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations
[Luke 2:9-12] And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”
[Luke 2:16-17] So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child.
And also in;
[Luke 2:29-32] then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, “Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.”
9. THE DAY OF SALVATION WILL COME
[Isaiah 49:8] Thus says the LORD, “In a favorable time I have answered You, And in a day of salvation I have helped You; And I will keep You and give You for a covenant of the people, To restore the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages
[2 Corinthians 6:2] For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.
10. HIS OWN FAMILY WILL NOT RECEIVE HIM
[Psalm 69:8] I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother’s children
[John 1:11] He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
11. HE WILL STAY IN THE AREA OF ZEBULUN AND NAPHTALI
[Isaiah 9:1-2] Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
[Matthew 4:13-16] Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
12. THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON THE MESSIAH
[Isaiah 61:1-2] The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn
[Luke 4:17-21] And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing”
13. HE WILL HEAL THE BLIND, DEAF, MUTE, LAME, AND LEPROUS PEOPLE
[Isiah 35:5-6] Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert
[Luke 7:21] And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.
[Matthew 11:4-6] Jesus answered John’s disciples, “Go back, and tell John what you hear and see: Blind people see again, lame people are walking, those with skin diseases are made clean, deaf people hear again, dead people are brought back to life, and poor people hear the Good News. Whoever doesn’t lose his faith in me is indeed blessed.”
14. HE WILL SPEAK IN PARABLES
[Psalm 78:2-4] I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old— things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us. We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done
[Matthew 13:10-13] The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand”
15. HE WILL BE A PRIEST AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHISEDEK
[Psalm 110:4] He will be a priest after the order of Melchisedek.
[Hebrews 5:6] In another place in Scripture, God said, “You are a priest forever, in the way Melchizedek was a priest.”
16. HE WILL RECEIVE ALL AUTHORITIES FROM THE FATHER
[Daniel 7:14] “And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations and men of every language might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed”
[Matthew 28:18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me”.
[1 Peter 3:22] who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
17. HE WILL HUSH THE STORM AND WAVES OF THE SEA
[Psalm 107:28-29] Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed.
[Mark 4:38-39] Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
18. HE WILL PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE
[Psalm 109:4] I love them, but they try to destroy me with accusations even as I am praying for them!
[Luke 23:34] Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
19. THE MESSIAH WILL PRAY TO GOD
[Psalm 69:13] But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, at an acceptable time; O God, in the greatness of Your loving kindness, Answer me with Your saving truth.
[Hebrews 6:7] During his life on earth, Jesus prayed to God, who could save him from death. He prayed and pleaded with loud crying and tears, and he was heard because of his devotion to God
20. HE WILL BE PRAISED BY CHILDREN
[Psalm 8:2] Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
[Matthew 21:16] “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes, replied Jesus, have you never read, ‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?”
21. THE MESSIAH WILL GLORIFY THE FATHER
[Isaiah 60:9] “Surely the coastlands will wait for Me; And the ships of Tarshish will come first, To bring your sons from afar, Their silver and their gold with them, For the name of the LORD your God, And for the Holy One of Israel because He has glorified you.
[John 17:4-5] “I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
22. THE MESSIAH WILL CONFIRM THE NEW COVENANT
[Psalm 89:28] “My loving kindness I will keep for him forever, And My Covenant shall be confirmed to him.
[Luke 22:20] In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the New Covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you”
23. THE MESSIAH WILL RIDE ON A DONKEY
[Zechariah 9:9] The Coming of Zion’s King Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
[Matthew 21:2-5] Saying unto them, Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you shall find a donkey tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. And if any man say anything unto you, you shall say, The Lord has need of them; and immediately he will send them. All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your King comes unto you, meek, and sitting upon a donkey, and a colt the foal of a donkeyN
[Luke 19:35-37] They brought the donkey to Jesus, put their coats on it, and helped Jesus onto it. As he was riding along, people spread their coats on the road. By this time he was coming near the place where the road went down the Mount of Olives. Then the whole crowd of disciples began to praise God for all the miracles they had seen
24. PEOPLE WILL HATE HIM WITHOUT REASON
[Psalm 35:19] Do not let those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; do not let those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye.
[John 15:24-25] If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason”.
25. HIS CLOSE FRIEND WILL BETRAY HIM
[Psalm 41:9] Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.
[Luke 22:47-48] While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
26. THE MESSIAH WILL BE SOLD AT THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER
[Zechariah 11:12] I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver
[Matthew 26:14-16] Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over
27. THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER WILL BE THROWN TO THE POTTER
[Zechariah 11:13] And the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the house of the Lord
[Matthew 27:7-10] After conferring together, they used the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on Him by the people of Israel and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord had commanded me.”
28. FALSE WITNESSES WILL BRING CHARGE AGAINST HIM
[Psalm 35:11] False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not
[Mark 14:57-58] Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’”
29. THE MESSIAH WILL BE SENTENCED TO DEATH
[Isaiah 53:8] He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken
[Matthew 27:1-2] “Very early in the morning, the leading priests and other leaders met again to discuss how to persuade the Roman government to sentence Jesus to death. Then they bound Him and took Him to Pilate, the Roman governor.”
30. HE WILL BE NUMBERED WITH THE TRANSGRESSORS
[Isaiah 53:12] Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors
[Mark 15:27-28] They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. And the Scripture was fulfilled, which said, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
31. THE MESSIAH’S FACE WILL BE BEATEN AND SPAT
[Isaiah 50:6] I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting
[Matthew 26:67] Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him
32. HIS TORTURERS WILL PIERCE HIS HANDS AND FEET
[Psalm 22:16] Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet
[John 20:25-27] So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
33. HE WILL BE PIERCED AND PEOPLE WILL MOURN FOR HIM
[Zechariah 12:10] “They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.
[John 19:34] Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water
[Luke 23:27-28] A great number of people followed Him, including women who kept mourning and wailing for Him.
34. THE PEOPLE WILL SNEER AT HIM
[Psalm 22:7] All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, “Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him”
[Luke 23:35] The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
35. HE WILL BE OFFERED WITH GALL
[Psalm 69:21] They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst
[Matthew 27:34] There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.
36. THE MESSIAH WILL CALL OUT GOD
[Psalm 22:1] “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?”
[Matthew 27:46 & Mark 15:34] At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
37. HE WILL DIE AND COMMIT HIS SPIRIT TO GOD
[Psalm 31:5] “Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, LORD, my faithful God”
[Luke 23:46] Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.
38. MESSIAH’S BONES WILL NOT BE BROKEN
[Psalm 34:20] He keeps all his bones, Not one of them is broken
[John 19:33] But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs
39. HIS TORTURERS WILL DIVIDE HIS GARMENTS AMONG THEM BY CASTING LOTS
[Psalm 22:18] They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots
[Matthew 27:35 & Mark 15:24] When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lot
40. HIS KINSMEN AND FRIENDS WILL STAND AFAR DURING HIS ORDEAL
[Psalm 38:11] My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague; And my kinsmen stand afar off
[Luke 23:49] And all His acquaintances and the women who accompanied Him from Galilee, were standing at a distance, seeing these things.
41. THE EARTH WILL BE DARKENED AT NOON UPON HIS DEATH
[Amos 8:9] “And it will come about in that day,” declares the Lord GOD, “That I shall make the sun go down at noon And make the earth dark in broad daylight
[Matthew 27:45] Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour
COMMENT: In Jesus time, the Jews had twelve hours from sunrise to sunset. This would make the sixth hour about noon, and the ninth hour close to three o’clock.
42. THE MESSIAH WILL BE BURIED BY A RICH MAN
[Isaiah 53:9] He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth
[Matthew 27:57–59] When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth
43. THE MESSIAH’S DEAD BODY WILL NOT DECAY
[Psalm 16:10] because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
[Matthew 28:6-7] He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee.
44. HE WILL SIT AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER
[Psalm 110:1] The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
[Mark 16:19] When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand
